Knife Sharpeners

A lot of people don’t realize that knife sharpeners are an essential tool for any kitchen. It’s a lot safer for someone to use a very sharp knife than to use a dull knife–The chances of slipping and cutting yourself are much greater when you have to attack the food with a dull knife than when a sharp knife just does what you mean to do.

Many people think that the long, metal honing steel, which looks like a big skewer, is a knife sharpener, but it’s really not. When a knife gets dull, it’s because the edge of the blade has bent over to the side, a honing steel can correct the bend. The time when knife sharpeners come in handy the most is when the edge is so bent over that a honing steel doesn’t work–a knife sharpener will just shave off the edge of the blade, forming a nice, new one.

I didn’t think that knife sharpeners made that big of a difference until I started to use one. I noticed an immediate difference in the quality of my knife, and I felt much more confident in the kitchen. My speed and accuracy both went up, and I am now able to produce better-looking food. That’s why I would recommend a knife sharpener for every kitchen.
